A happy accident made me realize that I should also be teaching science to the immigrant youth living in Istanbul. These bi-cultural young adults have an excellent command of Turkish, so they can easily evaluate by themselves whether GBA courses are relevant to them or not. The actual reason I’m writing this post is to address their parents.
What is Güzel Bilimler Atölyesi?
Güzel Bilimler Atölyesi translates into “Fine Sciences Atelier”. There is this notion of fine arts and I had a moment: Why don’t we call Sciences as Fine too? My goal here in GBA is to introduce students the aesthetics and the chicness of the scientific laws in a cheerful class environment.
Intriguing titles of high school biology, chemistry and physics are covered in general. Mentoring sessions are also organized once in a week. Each class is comprised of min. 7 – max. 13 students.
What sets GBA apart?
I teach the Scientific Phenomena that we regulary encounter in our daily lives. No maths, no problem-solving nor boring stuff involved! This way the lectures become more fluid and easy to participate. We just talk and share information as we naturally do in real life.
Who am I?
Well.. My name is Ömer Faruk Öner (198X). Formerly having an engineering background, but also interested in some other non-binary stuff onwards. I always had a vision to launch a non-profit platform to educate young people. Now I have the means and the time to realize that for free.
Why do I do this for free?
I’m an education activist. An idealist to the core. That simple. I do carry the aspiration, spirit and educational perspective to reach out young people. My ultimate objective is to teach my students how to turn information into wisdom.
Note: I don’t work for any kind of NGO’s nor religious groups nor enterprises. Güzel Bilimler Atölyesi is solely initiated by the idea of serving the society in good deeds.
Freemium vs Premium Courses
I prepared 33 courses in which 7 of them are totally free1 to every student between 16-21 yrs. Though I feel very invigorated while conversing with 11-12 yrs*, Güzel Bilimler encompasses the science topics tought in high school syllabuses.
*12 yrs is the age that brain’s neural connections are wide spread and physiologically reach its maxima. Then it will set into a curbed mould during puberty. Which means, if the puberty period is not mitigated as it should have been (education-wise), some of the inherent talents or earnings up to that age will be phased out.
1 Totally free means: 50TL is requested (in 12 installments) to fixate the registration and pay the meeting room fee. I charge no hourly price personally.
The other non-free ones(150TL/student) are somewhat complicated topics and composed of series of classes. The revenue I collect is spent to underprivilaged students and to the improvement of GBA without any overhead expense cuts. My own sources are limited, If not scarce, a friendly help is always appriciated in my mission to excel young adults.
